Improving the school together

Principal’s Report

This past year, will certainly be remembered as our “year of accreditations”.  The school has achieved a major milestone in obtaining the ACSI International Accreditation status.

A little background will help to understand what the accreditation means to us.  Northwest Christian School is part of the Association of Christian Schools International.  ACSI represents 24 000 schools worldwide.  They have a stringent accreditation program that schools may apply for.  Currently there are 86 accredited schools outside the USA. There are only two ACSI accredited schools in South Africa, of which we are one, and we are the only Primary school with this distinction.

We are extremely honoured to have achieved this high standard. One of the immediate spin-offs is that our school is automatically recognised by the American State Department. The school may be used for student internships as part of the training programme for prospective teachers.

The International Accreditation process also evaluates the level of Biblical Integration, the standard of Educational Programmes and the effectiveness of Operational Functions of the school.

This year has also been a year of wonderful achievements across the board of the activities of the school. Our children have achieved amazing results in sports. We were especially pleased with all our medals at the SACSSA National Athletics Championships. Our cultural activities have also been recognised for being of a high standard.

We give God the glory for all the things He has done.

Our Mission

We aim to rescue and receive any abandoned, aborted, abused and orphaned babies and children from any source in cooperation with other agencies. To provide a temporary Christian home for all our babies and children whilst seeking a forever family, suitable long term foster

care or other permanent care for each one

Our History

Berea Baptist Church is a small Mission Church established in the very heart of Johannesburg. It consists of two houses and a few outbuildings. The main house is used as a place of worship for people from 16 different nations and the 2nd house is for the residing pastor and his wife.

In 1999 the pastor at the time, Cheryl Allen, and deacons learned with deep distress that a high number of newly born infants were being abandoned. At the time 40-50 babies were being dumped every month and left to die of starvation or exposure. Cheryl realized that many of

those desperate women and girls may well have acted differently had there been an alternative.

The church made a hole in their wall and a ‘baby bin’ was installed allowing for mothers to leave their babies anytime day or night. The moment a baby is placed in the bin care workers on duty receive an electronic signal alerting them. The baby is taken in and the anonymity of

the donor ensured. News has spread and other babies have been brought personally by their mothers or have come through other means such as the police, community members, hospitals or clinics. By faith and reliance on God alone and from small, humble beginnings, the ministry

has grown and over 100 children’s’ lives are being saved every year.

Whilst the Door of Hope baby bin was an innovative idea, the mission was criticized as it was felt that we were encouraging abandonment. However to date we have received only 10% of our babies through the baby bin. It was the uniqueness of this “hole in the wall” concept that has made us prominent and allowed us to become one of the foremost homes in Johannesburg for abandoned babies.
